Be Prepared for Colder Weather

Winter has arrived in the Midwest and now is the time to prepare for colder weather.  SERVPRO of Barrington / North Schaumburg offers these tips from the American Red Cross to protect your pipes from freezing:

• Add insulation to attics, basements, and crawl spaces. Insulation will maintain higher temperatures in these areas.
• Drain water from swimming pools and water sprinkler supply lines following the manufacturer's or installer's directions
• Remove, drain, and store hoses used outdoors. Close inside valves supplying outdoor hose bibs. Open the outside hose bibs to allow water to drain. Keep the outside valve open so that any water remaining in the pipe can expand without causing the pipe to break.
• Check around the home for other areas where water supply lines are located in unheated areas. Look in the garage and under the kitchen and bathroom cabinets. Both hot and cold-water pipes in these areas should be insulated.
• Consider installing specific products made to insulate water pipes, like a "pipe sleeve" or installing UL-listed "heat tape," "heat cable," or similar materials on exposed water pipes. Newspaper can provide some degree of insulation and protection to exposed pipes – even ¼ inch of newspaper can provide significant protection in areas that usually do not have frequent or prolonged temperatures below freezing.
• Consider relocating exposed pipes to provide increased protection from freezing

Plan now - Be prepared for a power outage.

Power outages can happen when you least expect them.  Plan now to have what you need in the event of a power outage.  Here are some tips from the American Red Cross to stay safe:

Create a support network. Identify people who can help you stay at home or evacuate during an extended power outage. Keep a paper copy of your contact list.

Stay connected and alert. Sign up for alert systems and apps for text alerts. Have communication devices that work without home power, including a crank or battery radio, a non-cordless home phone, chargers/batteries for your cell phones and your computers.

Stock food and water. Store non-perishable food and water supplies for at least two weeks. Plan to use coolers and ice to extend food refrigeration and keep a thermometer in the fridge, freezer, or cooler to monitor the food temperature.

Know and plan for your personal and medical electrical needs. Take an inventory of your electrical needs. Consider both back up and non-power alternatives for lighting, communication, medical devices and refrigerated medicine, cooking, garage doors, locks, and elevators. Discuss a plan with your doctor for your medical needs.

Plan how to decide to stay or go. Plan how and when you will evacuate safely to maintain needs such as power-dependent medical devices. Keep your car gas tank at least half full.

What are Ice Dams?

Know what to look for when it comes to a possible ice dam.

Understanding Ice Dams

During the winter and stormy months, you may experience an ice dam. Ice dams are the formation of ice on the top edge of a house or building that prevents melting snow from draining off the roof. Ice dams happen because your home generates heat, and this heat naturally melts the snow on the shingles which then turns into water. The water then freezes on the edges of the roof due to the weather being so cold and the eaves not receiving any heat because it is hanging off the side of the house. The ice dam then traps snow onto the roof, which can cause the inside of your home once it starts to melt with nowhere to go but down into the shingles.

If trapped melted snow does make its way through your shingles and into your home- that’s when it can cause water damage. In order to prevent these issues and stop ice dams from forming, one can remove snow from the roof. When removing the ice and snow from the roof, do not use an ax or sharp object as it could do more damage. Instead, you should use an object like a mallet. After the snow and ice have been removed, the gutters and downspouts need to be cleared. Blizzards and Hurricanes and Tornadoes- Oh My!

There are numerous different types of storms, including blizzards, dust storms, hurricanes, and tornadoes. Some storms are similar, such as blizzards and dust storms. Both involve high winds moving many small particles through the air (snow for snowstorms and dust for dust storms). However, a dust storm is more likely in an arid location like a desert- we don’t see these in Barrington. While a dust storm may lead to breathing and lung difficulties if the dust is consumed over long periods of time, a blizzard can lead to hypothermia or frostbite if out in the elements for too long of a time.

Tornadoes and hurricanes are both high wind events leading to damage of property as they form in cylindrical patterns. With these storms, in addition to the high winds causing property damage as they push and move property around, they both can lead to heavy rain and flooding.
